Types of Carpet Fiber

There are four main types of carpet fiber: Nylon, Olefin, Polyester, and Wool. In the United States, over half of the carpet installed is made of nylon, but there are other good alternatives available.
Nylon Carpet
The Good:
- Durable, resilient - Easy to clean - Soft, comfortable - Versatile - Comes in a variety of colors and designs - Holds up in high traffic areas
The Bad:
- Not stain resistant - May fade over time
Olefin (Polypropylene) Carpet
The Good:
- Relatively inexpensive - Stain resistant, moisture resistant - Cleans well - Typically used for basements and outdoor areas - Color won’t fade
The Bad:
- Poor resiliency, crushed easily - Can be damaged by heat and/or friction
Polyester Carpet
The Good:
- Very soft - Color won’t fade - Stain resistant
The Bad:
- Not ideal for high traffic areas - Poor resiliency, can be crushed easily
Wool The Good:
- Top of the line, premium carpet - Very resilient, durable - Very soft
The Bad:
- Very expensive - Must be cleaned carefully - Susceptible to damage from moths
