5 Carpet Buying Tips
Before hiring a carpet installer, use the tips below to help you make a smart decision.
1. Get several estimates (and measurements). Getting more than one estimate helps to make sure that you’re getting a fair price for the work. Keep in mind that the lowest offer may not be the best option though. Use ProMatcher’s Carpet Installation Cost Checklist to make sure that the installer isn’t cutting any corners. To provide a better estimate, the contractor will likely come to your home to measure the area. Don’t just rely on your own measurements. However, you should be wary of measurements that vary significantly from your own.
2. Get everything in writing! Before hiring a contractor, make sure to get everything about the installation in writing. The details are important. The cost estimate should not just have the amount of carpet needed. It should also have detailed information the manufacturer, pile, fiber, and color of the carpet. An itemized cost estimate will let you know exactly what's included upfront, helping to avoid surprise costs later on. Make sure all of the necessary materials are included, from trim to padding.
3. Be prepared for accidents. When purchasing carpet, you should think about the future. Especially if you have small children, spills and stains are inevitable. Make sure to keep some carpet on hand for future repairs. A few years down the road, it may not be able to find the same carpet. You'll be forced to settle for an almost match or you'll have to replace all of the carpet.
4. Don’t skimp on padding! Although it may seem like an after-thought, selecting the right carpet padding is an important task. Make sure to select a pad that is compatible with the carpet fiber and carpet pile you choose. Not only do you want the padding to be comfortable, but you want to last just as long as the carpet (if not longer).
5. Ask about warranties. Most carpeting will come with a manufacturer’s warranty. Before the installation is complete, make sure to get the necessary information from your contractor. If an issue presents itself over time, you’ll have the right paperwork to handle the situation. Additionally, the installer of the carpet may over a warranty on the workmanship. Make sure the details of the warranty are included in your signed contract.
